What is World Food Day anyway?

Contrary to the popular belief, WFD is not a day to celebrate the one thing we all love. In fact, it is a day to take action against hunger.

By Roxy Greeff

It began on October 16, 1945, at the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States. Since then, the fight against hunger is pledged on this day each year by almost every country in the world.

As of 1 October this year, the well-known local organisaton FoodBank SA changed their name to FoodForward SA in celebration of World Food Day. In order to address the drastic food insecurity in South Africa, they have partnered up with 600 beneficiary organisations and are feeding 175 000 people daily.

‘Forward thinking, innovative, and always striving to improve and grow, our new name aims to imprint in the minds of those we humbly serve and partner, that we will always do our best in the fight against hunger. Our mission is to deliver hope to the hungry and, thanks to our generous donors, we are able to continue our social purpose,’ they say.

Here are four ways you can get involved this World Food Day:

1. HASHTAG TO FEED

Knorr South Africa has pledged to donate one meal for every #ShareAMealSA hashtag on their Knorr What’s For Dinner Facebook page or Tweet to them today.

2. BUY A BONHAPPI T

Purchase a Bonhappi T from their online store here for only R299. For every t-shirt sold, they will donate R35 to FoodForward SA, who will use that to feed someone for a month.

3. FEAT FOR FOOD

Is there a personal goal or dream you have always wanted to achieve? FoodForward SA can use your admirral feats to make a positive impact on social change. Choose your feat, get support from your friends and family, and then contact them at Ashleigh@foodforwardsa.org or on 021 531 5670 to get started.

4. HOST A FOOD DRIVE

What is particularly popular among FoodForward SA supporters is themed food drives – you can organise your own with their help. Alternatively, get hold of your nearest branch, find out when the next scheduled drive is and drop off your goods.
