8 things you never knew vegetable oil could do

Vegetable oil has been used for centuries, not only for making comforting and delicious food, but also for everything from home cleaning to sealing wine before bottle tops were a thing.

B-well Canola & Olive Oil Blend is no exception in its usefulness in everyday life. Combining the unique properties of B-well Canola Oil with the amazing taste of extra-virgin olive oil, it certainly shines in the kitchen, but it also has many different uses that go above and beyond our foodie dreams.

Canola & olive oil

1. KEY LOCK LUBRICANT
Some locks are notorious for sticking, but there’s no need to battle with them every day. Rub a little oil onto your key before using it, and it will help to lubricate the lock when you slot it in.

2. REMOVE PAINT FROM YOUR HANDS
If you’re someone who likes to spend your spare moment knee-deep in DIY or craft projects, you know that scrubbing paint off your hands can be a chore. Put that rough sponge away and reach for your bottle of oil instead. Rub some on your hands and just chill for 5-10 minutes before washing your hands like normal. That pesky paint will rinse right off.

3. SEASON YOUR CAST IRON
Cast iron pots, pans and even furniture can last a lifetime if they are properly looked after, and you won’t even need any special or costly products to do so. Give your cast iron a wash and make sure it’s properly dry. Dab a bit of oil onto a piece of paper towel and rub it into your cast iron. This thin layer of oil will prevent the formation of rust when it’s sitting in your cupboard and will create a great non-stick surface over time.

4. KEEP GARDEN TOOLS CLEAN
The next time you’re mowing the lawn or breaking out the rake, think of your trusty bottle of B-well. Coating the blade of your lawnmower or any other garden tool with a dash of oil will prevent the build-up of grass clippings and clumps of dirt from sticking.

5. MOISTURISE DRY SKIN
If lockdown has left you a little out of pocket (and your hands are constantly dry and chapped from all the sanitising and hand-washing), you’re not alone. Ditch the fancy hand creams and lip balms and reach for your bottle of vegetable oil instead. Rub a drop or two onto any dry areas of skin, and they will soften up in no time.

6. SEPARATE GLASS KITCHENWARE
Are you also in the habit of stacking glass tumblers and mixing bowls together at the back of your cupboard? If you don’t use them enough, the dust and humidity and dust will work against you, sticking them together slightly. Before you wrench them apart and risk cracking or dropping them, pour a thin stream of oil around the rims and after a few moments, they should come apart with ease.

7. PROTECT RATTAN & WICKER FURNITURE
We all love this kind of raw, natural furniture, especially on the patio during our long summer months. But the hot South African sun has a tendency to leave it cracked, dull and longing for attention. But don’t despair, because the answer is sitting in your pantry! Dip a soft cloth into some oil and buff over the wicker to protect it and improve its longevity.

8. IMPROVE YOUR PET’S COAT
Keep your furry friend’s coat smooth and shiny by drizzling a small amount of vegetable oil into their food. Not only will it improve their skin and coat condition, but it will also make their food taste better. Just make sure you’re adding only a tiny amount, and speak to your vet first if your pet is on a special diet.
